Acid Neutralisation Tanks

Overview

Waste-water from industries, workshops, photographic labs, school or university labs can be acidic in nature and requires to be treated before being released into the sewer. An Acid Neutralisation tank is used to normalise the pH level of waste water containing high levels of acid before this waste water can be discharged into the sewerage system.

At Austere, our acid neutralising tanks are filled with calcite for acid neutralisation. The tanks are fitted with three internal baffles. The three baffle system forces liquid and acidic waste to flow through the tank to filter past the calcite, thereby neutralising the acid and settling the pH of the water. This water can finally be safely discharged to the sewer.

Process

Acid neutralisation is the process of balancing the pH by adding some basic media.

The objective of acid neutralization is to bring effluent wastewater to a neutral pH of 7.0, making the acidic wastewater suitable for discharge. The pH level of the discharge has to be to an acceptable level which in turn depends on the destination of the discharge I.e. a stream, a well or a sewer leading to a municipal waste treatment plant.

At Austere, our acid neutralising tanks are filled with calcite for acid neutralisation. The tanks are fitted with three internal baffles to ensure there is enough contact time for the influent neutralisation. The influent acidic wastewater progresses through the three-baffle system forcing the acidic waste to flow through the tank and thereby making it interact with the calcite. This interaction with calcite neutralises the acid and settling the pH of the water. This neutralised water can finally be safely discharged to the sewer.
